My circle of friends are very 'newsy' and it can be slightly awkward at times, albeit more for them than myself now. I think most people when they really give it some thought realise that most of what they are reading/listening to/absorbing is not only irrelevant to their lives, but generally irrelevant full stop. Every once in a while I'll get a "where have you been?" look from someone, but usually I'll hear all the important stories sooner or later.
